AN EVENING OF SPECTACLE
The Dark Lantern Players consisted of four artists Amanda Champness, Abigail Clark, Andrea Slater, and Daniella Norton. The four artists have had in varying combinations had a number of exhibitions in the past. With Amanda, Andrea and Daniella all graduating from Brighton University‘s MA in Fine Art in 2007, within which they exhibited together in MAFA which was a culmination of two years work. As well as Amanda and Abigail (along with Robbie Jenkins) taking part 2008‘s open houses.
Receiving a warm welcome to the festival with visiting comments of:
“Great words, superb clock, fascinating window pieces– Hope you‘ve back next year”
“Some remarkably original and delightful pieces”
“A very interesting way of displaying fresh thinking artists work and concepts, another reason for me to get down here!”
For this event the group of three, become four and were looking to push the very idea of the exhibition, and to contribute to the variety of the festival. Answering the calls from last year‘s audience as well as the call from the festival of:
“Utilising non-traditional venues” “doing something different, pushing boundaries, broadening horizons - building new partnerships and collaborations” (Eastbourne Festival Aims, 2009)
Therefore we took over a disused shop on the 23rd April for one night only.
Veering away from the typical white space, which can be intimidating and sometimes unwelcoming to the unfamiliar and moving away from the intimate experience of visiting someone‘s house, we were hoping the shop will be a neutral and welcoming venue.
Looking to intrigue, to evoke, to ask questions and to ask for answers, we came together to produce interactive pieces, and an evening of spectacle. With an array of projections, an intriguing performance, a set of dazzling treats, a collection of images on wall, with an open invitation to contribute.
